NDIS Adaptive Clothing - What is Covered and How to Claim

For many people living with disability, getting dressed each day can be a significant challenge. Adaptive clothing is specifically designed to make dressing easier, more comfortable and more dignified  and the good news is that it may be claimable under your NDIS funding.

At InCare Supports we are proud to exclusively stock the Christina Stephens adaptive clothing range, one of Australia's most celebrated and innovative adaptive fashion labels. In this guide we explain what adaptive clothing is, how NDIS funding works for it, and how to shop with your NDIS funds.

What is Adaptive Clothing?

Adaptive clothing is specially designed garments that make dressing easier and more accessible for people living with disability, reduced mobility or changing bodies. This can include garments designed for easy dressing or undressing, with modifications like Velcro closures instead of buttons, or clothing that accommodates medical devices, wheelchairs or prosthetics.

Adaptive clothing is about far more than practicality, it is about dignity, independence and the right to express your personal style regardless of your disability.

Is Adaptive Clothing Covered by the NDIS?

Adaptive clothing may be claimable under your NDIS funding. Adaptive clothing may be eligible for funding through a participant's NDIS plan under Consumables.

If your plan is self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed, you can use your Core Supports low assistive technology budget to purchase adaptive clothing.

It is always a good idea to check with your plan manager or support coordinator before purchasing to confirm eligibility for your specific plan.

How Do I Claim Adaptive Clothing With My NDIS Funding?

How you purchase and claim adaptive clothing depends on how your NDIS plan is managed:

  • Self-managed participants — you purchase the items yourself and claim reimbursement from the NDIA directly. Keep your receipt and invoice as proof of purchase.
  • Plan-managed participants — your plan manager pays the invoice on your behalf. At InCare Supports we can invoice your plan manager directly, making the process simple and hassle free.
  • NDIA-managed participants — Christina Stephens is a registered NDIS provider, meaning NDIA-managed participants can access the Christina Stephens range through the NDIS portal. This is the only product range we are able to supply to NDIA-managed participants at this time.
